I wrote and produced the songs for Tropic in the late autumn and early winter of 2012, at my home studio in California. It was my second release on Yer Bird Records, and the last proper album I released before a long hiatus. I was working on a follow-up in 2013 when I got side-tracked by Ashtanga for several years! Some of the songs I wrote and recorded in 2013 for that intended record eventually ended up on a few of the singles I released on Spotify in 2018 and 2019 through J&J Records.
I am very proud of the songs on Tropic, and I am grateful to have been able to release it through Yer Bird. It was great to be associated with the label for a little while, and I am proud to have my music alongside some of the other excellent artists who have released through YB.
The album was named "Tropic" not so much in reference to the region of the earth, but more in terms of the biological phenomenon of tropism, by which organisms move naturally towards the things that nurture them. Listening back to the album, it has a particularly melancholy tone, a sense of giving up rather than letting go; perhaps also a feeling of hopelessness around what I was trying to do, musically. I realize now that I probably needed to move away from writing songs for a while. I have always been pleased with the way it turned out, though; the production, the intricacy of the guitar parts, and the way it all seems to hang together...
This album was produced as a limited edition CD for sale by Yer Bird, which I believe is now sold out. I may have a few unopened copies lying around somewhere though!
Thank you for listening, thank you for your support and encouragement, and thank you, Dad, for the lovely job you did of mastering this album.
